A New Pavilion
The aluminum and eucalyptus composite shell structure creates a lace-like visual effect and is largely self- supporting, with supplemental uprights that spring from the cast concrete slab that support both ground and upper levels. End exposures are enclosed by dot screen-filtered, structural glass.
This allows flexible use of its open exhibition spaces and optimizes the art viewing experience by allowing a controlled level of natural light vis-à- vis fixed vision panels and operable glass slots for ventilation in non-exhibition spaces.
An entry tube 'skewers' the volume north/south for easy pedestrian flow and egress; its internal ramp slopes 1m above grade to anticipate any periodic canal flooding that is known to occur in Venice. In plan, a raised plinth provides outdoor exhibition and assembly space.
