Howard Duffy | Founding Principal + Design Director

Born in New York City, Howard received his architectural training from Hampton University and Pratt Institute. Howard founded HTDSTUDIO in 2000 which has since become an internationally recognized, research and design based practice with a mission to bring innovative design excellence to architectural, interior, urban and sustainable design projects. He has won several competitions including the Edward Waters College Library in 2004 and Griffintown Horse Palace Competition in 2010.

He has taught and lectured at numerous institutions and symposia, including NYCoBA, CUNY City Tech, Design Nation 7 in Detroit, Newark Museum, NYU Real Estate Institute, Parsons School of Design, Pratt, NJIT and has been published in the 752-page monograph “Panel Layout for Competition“ in 2009, by Damdi, Korea and “DiStasio - A New Australian Pavilion” in 2008, among other national and international publications and periodicals.

Howard is a Board Member Emeritus of the West Harlem Group, and is included in the permanent collection of the African American Design Archive at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City. In addition to numerous projects currently underway, Howard is working with a Detroit non-profit with promoting job creation, sustainability and hyperlocal communities.

Research + Technical Development

Like any design firm that strives to innovate, HTDSTUDIO takes much pride in the opportunities it gets to create new architectural languages, statements and typologies. Whether limited or open competition, RFP or one-off research project, we use these exercises not only to affirm our expertise and strength as a design firm, but also to develop a steadily expanding repertoire of design elements and details.
